Using the apprenticeship levy to build a first class careers service

Careers education is under increasing pressure. Rising numbers of young people not in education, employment or training, alongside uncertainty around graduate outcomes, mean schools and colleges must rethink how they support progression.

While universities remain important, they are no longer the default route for every learner. Careers services need to reflect a broader range of options, including apprenticeships and local labour market opportunities.

National initiatives such as Careers Hubs play a valuable role, but long-term impact depends on strong in-house capacity. Apprenticeships can help schools and colleges build that capacity sustainably.

Parents are also central. They remain the biggest influence on young people’s decisions, and careers professionals need the skills and confidence to engage families effectively.

Two apprenticeships stand out in this space: the Employer Practitioner Apprenticeship and the Career Development Professional Apprenticeship. Both support consistent, high-quality careers guidance rooted in real practice.

Used strategically, the apprenticeship levy can transform careers provision. National College of Education works with schools and colleges to support this journey.
