Education is a rewarding profession, but the days are long and the stakes are high. If you are apprenticing at the same time, looking after your wellbeing is not an optional extra. It is part of doing the work well.
Why wellbeing matters on an apprenticeship
You are learning in the middle of live classrooms, corridors, safeguarding cases and parent conversations. Your brain is doing a lot at once. Protecting your energy is what keeps your practice sharp and your resilience high, especially in the weeks leading up to end-point assessment.
Set up your week for success
Block your off-the-job study time into your diary as a fixed appointment
Agree quiet space with your line manager so that study time does not become cover time
Batch reading and reflection into the parts of the day when you focus best
Keep one evening a week free from anything related to the apprenticeship
Look after your body
Sleep, movement and hydration make a bigger difference than any productivity system. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep across term time, step outside once a day even if the weather is difficult, and keep a bottle of water on your desk. Small habits carry big weeks.
Look after your mind
The work you do in a classroom, in a safeguarding meeting or with a vulnerable young person can be heavy. Talk about it with a trusted colleague, your NCE Development Coach or your setting's safeguarding lead. If you are struggling, contact your GP or a service such as Education Support on 08000 562 561, which is free and confidential for anyone working in UK education.
You are not alone
Your NCE Development Coach, your workplace mentor and your fellow apprentices are all part of the same team. Reach out early rather than late. There is no medal for pushing through in silence, and there is a great deal of support waiting for you.
